10 Trucking Schools in North Dakota
Thursday, Sep 27 2018 admin
Let’s just start out by noting the elephant in the room. North Dakota is one of the least populated states in the US. Just how many truck driver training programs can there be here? Well, as we discovered there are nearly a dozen highly reputable trucking schools in ND. Furthermore, half of these programs feature certificate programs at local colleges. Compare this to the quality of truck driver training in other states to see how North Dakota excels in training student drivers. Here are all of the ND trucking schools and training programs, along with a few tips on finding the right truck driver training for yourself.
Private Truck Driving Schools
Starting with the privately owned trucking schools, there is a handful of these located throughout North Dakota:
- CES Truck Driving School in Dickinson and West Fargo
- Truck Driver Training Institute in Wahpeton
- 1st Geer Driving School in Bismarck
- Behind the Wheel in Carrington
Fargo, being the most populated city in the state, is good for more than just great television. Here you’ll find the CES Truck Driving School, which has a second location in Dickinson. If you know about the oil boom history, then you are aware that Dickinson is nearly smack dab in the center of this.
There was a huge population boom and an even bigger demand for truck drivers to work in oil fields in North Dakota. Today the boom has burst but the oil still bubbles up, which means there is still a need for ND truck drivers to work on oil fields here at the Bakken Formation. While the demand isn’t as high, it is actually a good thing for truckers. There is a less hectic pace, which improves safety ratings for truckers.
Colleges and Technical Schools in North Dakota
Several of the community colleges and technical institutes in North Dakota have CDL certificate programs. This is a great opportunity because you get to train to be a truck driver under the watchful, and accredited, eye of college or tech school. For trucking students who want more of the college experience, this is the prime time to get it. You might also be able to snag scholarships, grants, or work-study programs depending on the school you attend. Those schools include:
- Cankdeska Cikana Community College in Fort Totten
- North Dakota State College of Science in Fargo
- Nueta Hidatsa Sahnish College in New Town
- Bismarck State College in Bismarck
- Northland Community and Technical College in East Grand Forks
- Sitting Bull College in Fort Yates
NDDOT Approved Driver Training Programs
Another out of the ordinary way that you can find trucking schools in North Dakota is to check out schools with approved training. The North Dakota Department of Transportation in this particular state approves truck driver training programs. Keep in mind that most of these driving programs approved by the NDDOT are for student drivers getting their basic driving licenses.
However, if you are a student truck driver in North Dakota, it’s worth it to check out the list from time to time to see if any new schools are added. By the way, fun fact, if you are 14 in North Dakota, then you’re old enough to get your driver’s license. Remember that as you haul freight loads across this Midwestern plains state.
